SANTIAGO – Chile’s Ministry of Health on Sunday reported a total of 1,054 deaths from COVID-19, while the number of infected persons accumulated in the country is close to 100,000.
Over the last 24 hours, 4,830 new cases were reported along with 57 more deaths – a new record of daily deaths in the South American country.
Of the number of new confirmed cases, 4,437 presented symptoms and 484 were asymptomatic, with the Metropolitan Region being the one with the highest concentration of those affected.
Thus, the total number of infections accumulated in the country is 99,688. Of these 42,727 have been recovered and 55,907 remain active.
In addition, it was recorded that 19,120 PCR tests were performed , reaching 582,440 in total since its implementation began.
Meanwhile, 1,383 people are hospitalized in intensive care units and 1,174 remain connected to mechanical ventilation, 318 of them in critical condition.
Finally, the Minsal explained that there is an occupation of 88% of the beds at the country level, and 96% in the Metropolitan Region.
This week, the Chilean government announced to extend the quarantine in Santiago and 38 nearby towns until June 5 due to an increase in cases in recent weeks.
The quarantine is affecting around seven million people, and protests over “insufficient” government aid have arisen in poor sectors of the metropolitan region.
