SANTIAGO – This year marks the 25th edition of the Catad’Or Wine Awards, and for the first time in its long history, the concourse will take place during the month of October.
Catad’Or Wine Awards is the important international wine competition in Latin America. Over its 25 years, it has taken place in Santiago, capital of the world’s fourth largest wine exporting country.
The 25th Catad’Or Wine Awards will take place at Hotel Cumbres Lastarria, between 1-7 October 2020.
Catad’Or Wine Award enjoys the full endorsement of the OIV (the International Organization of Vin and Wine) and the International Union of Enologists. Since 2018, Catad’Or Wine Awards has been a member of VINOFED (the World Federation of Major International Wine and Spirits Competitions).
Catad’Or has operated continuously since 1995, and this year will be no exception.
Due to the international health emergency, Catad’Or will take various exceptional steps to maintain both its high standards and the safety of its judges and staff. One of the measures to be taken, in accordance to a temporary variance issued by the OIV, will be to reduce from 3 to 2, the number of international judges normally required for the jury of 5. This standard is will be extended for OIV competitions until December 2021.
“We will also return to the model of one table per juror, which had used until 2014, when we moved to a round-table format for the tastings. This change will assure the safe-distancing protocols recommended to maintain the well-being of our panelists. Chile fortunately has a large number of skilled wine professionals, including foreign residents, who are able to evaluate wines at the highest standards, so we have no concern at all concerned about jury quality,” says Pablo Ugarte, Catad’Or Executive Director.
“However, to mitigate the fact that some experts will be unable to travel to Chile, we will have wine travel to them. Together with our partner HotExpress, we will send award-winning wines in each category, as well as the Great Gold, to important international references in the commercial wine sector and to key critics. We also hope to conduct live tastings with importers and distributors in markets the wines are already present or with those open to export opportunities, as well as vitual tastings for consumers in order get to know the prize-winning wines,” Pablo added.
Other measures to be taken broadcasting the entire competition through live-steaming, making the proceedings more immediate to both wine producers and consumers, and giving them inside look about the setting and the process of blind tasting. The will also see interviews with jurors, videos about the wine regions from participating countries, discussions on various topics, and other fascinating content.
After the awards ceremony, participants will be able to download their official award certificate and to read a detailed evaluation of their registered wines but logging into their online account. Also, they will be able to access general competition statistics.
