SAO PAULO – A Brazilian judge earlier this week ordered the release of 24 Chilean soccer fans from pre-trial detention after they were arrested in a scuffle with police during a game.
The unrest happened Wednesday at the Arena Corinthians during the Copa Sudamericana playoff between Corinthians and Universidad de Chile. Police say some of the fans removed stadium seats and threw them at police officers. When those fans were arrested, others responded angrily. Seven people were injured.
A judge on Friday ordered the release of the 24 Chileans, most of them on bail. They cannot leave the country without permission and must notify the court of where they are staying while awaiting trial.
The charges against them include assault and criminal conspiracy.
Corinthians won the game 2-0.
