SANTIAGO – Chilean police yesterday confirmed that a top officer from the La Moneda Presidential Security department has tested positive for COVID-19.
Carabineros de Chile, in a statement on Saturday, said the colonel chief of the Security department of the Palacio de La Moneda will remain hospitalized while awaiting the results of his PCR examination.
The official is reported to have been connected to a mechanical ventilator due to his delicate state of health.

The disease was detected through the preventive control measures that are carried out at the Palacio de La Moneda, according to the statement.
The officer would not have worked or maintained close contact with President Sebastian Piñera, nor with state ministers. For its part, the institution indicates that the officials who maintained close contact with the chief of security also complied with the corresponding quarantine.
Carabineros, in the statement, also reiterated their call to the community for self-care and personal responsibility in the face of the health crisis facing the country.
Previously, several members of the Guard of the Palacio de La Moneda had tested positive for tests that detect the disease.
