SANTIAGO – A bomb exploded early Monday outside the Legal Assistance Corporation (CAJ) offices in Melipilla, a city located 70 kilometers (43 miles) southwest of Santiago, but no one was injured, Chilean police said.
Investigators found flyers bearing the message “Continua la guerra contra ricos, poderosos, corruptos y lacayos” (The War Continues against the Rich, Corrupt and Lackeys) and “Kompa Alejo, presente” (Comrade Alejo, present), a reference to Jose Alejandro Muñoz, who media reports said was killed last week in Caracas, Venezuela.
The murder of Muñoz, a former member of Chile’s Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR) who was known as “Chico Alejo,” has not been cleared up, media reports said.
The MIR took up arms against the military regime of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
The blast shattered the windows, left security bars mangled and caused other damage to the CAJ offices, police said.
The Carabineros militarized police force’s special operations unit responded to the bombing, gathering evidence at the scene.
The CAJ is a public service agency that provides legal advice to low-income people.
