La Paz – Bolivia has decided to return Chilean citizen Mauricio Felipe Ortega who illegally entered the country and photographed the waters of the Silala springs and a military base.
“Under the instruction of President Evo Morales, the citizen will be returned to the border, in the same locality where he was apprehended,” Defense Minister, Reymi Ferreira said.
“The decision is a sign of diplomatic courtesy and the manner of our people to not respond to aggression with more aggression,” he said.
According to Ferreira, the illegal entry of the citizen could be taken as an act of espionage, but it was decided to return him to Chile to prevent further growing tension between the two countries.
Bolivia and Chile have several controversies and one of them is the Silala springs. They start in the department of Potosi and supply many Chilean cities and companies without compensation to the country of origin.
This conflict is being settled in The Hague, where the Bolivians have made a claim for sovereign access to the sea.
