Mónica Zalaquett takes oath as Chile’s new Women & Gender Equality minister

SANTIAGO – Chile’s President Sebastian Piñera on Tuesday administered oath to the country’s new Minister for Women and Gender Equality, Mónica Zalaquett.

The 58-year-old former undersecretary of Tourism has replaced Macarena Santelices, who stepped down from the office earlier today after just 34 days in office.

“I appreciate the President’s trust and I take on this great challenge as minister of the @MinMujeryEG. Our priority will be to work committedly to end violence against women, gender equality and equal rights,” she said in a tweet after assuming the office.

The politician, also a member of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI), had also been a deputy for District 20.
