Chile announces closure of five embassies

SANTIAGO – Chile’s Foreign Ministry has announced the closure of the embassies in Denmark, Greece, Romania, Syria and Algeria.

As detailed this Sunday by El Mercurio, this Friday the ambassadors of the aforementioned countries were informed that they must conclude their affairs to close this year, with the purpose of modernizing foreign policies and strengthening other diplomatic missions.

“We have to understand that we live in a much more changing, more dynamic world … today, the new media and new power structures mean that one has to analyze whether it is possible to maintain the level of relations,” explained Foreign Minister Teodoro Ribera.

Chile appoints new ambassadors in Ecuador and New Zealand

According to the preliminary estimates of the savings in the fiscal coffers, this would allow to retain between three and four billion pesos that were destined for the operation of the embassies.

Meanwhile, it was reported that to have a greater presence in the issues discussed in the European Union, the embassies in Vienna and Brussels, capitals of Austria and Belgium, respectively, will be strengthened.
