SANTIAGO – An earthquake of medium magnitude shook the central zone of Chile on Saturday, without causing any loss of life or damage to property.
The National Seismological Center reported initially that the tremor had a magnitude of 4.9 degrees of intensity on the Richter scale, but later rectified the data upward and noted that it reached 5.3 degrees.
A few minutes after 9:00, the telluric movement could be seen in different parts of the Metropolitan, Coquimbo, Valparaíso and O’Higgins regions, the La Tercera reported.
According to information provided by the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile, the epicenter was located 35 kilometers southeast of Farellones.
In addition, the agency detailed that the earthquake originated 112.3 kilometers deep.

Through its Twitter account, the National Emergency Office (Onemi) – with information from the Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (Shoa) – indicated that the characteristics of the tremor “do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami on the coasts From Chile”.
