The Oscar goes to La La Land… No wait, it’s Moonlight!

Oscars 2017: Mahershala Ali made history by becoming the first Muslim to win an acting Oscar as he was honoured with the best supporting actor trophy.

HOLLYWOOD, Los Angeles — Amid the biggest announcement fiasco in the history of Academy Awards, ‘Moonlight’ won the Oscar for best picture, a crowning achievement for African-American filmmakers after two years of controversy over institutional racism in Hollywood.

Initially, ‘La La Land’ was declared the winner and the producers were in the middle of their acceptance speeches when the mistake was discovered.

PriceWaterhouseCooper, the accountancy firm responsible for counting the ballots, apologized for the mix-up.

La La Land still ended up the biggest winner of the night, taking home six Oscars including a best actress award for Emma Stone.

Moonlight’s surprise best picture win took its haul to three, the low-budget film having earlier won the adapted screenplay award and a best supporting actor prize for Mahershala Ali.

These are the winners of the 89th annual Academy Awards.
