With over 160,000 COVID-19 cases, Chile surpasses France to become 12th worst-hit country in the world

SANTIAGO – Chile on Friday surpassed France to become the 12th most affected nation in the world, with more than 160,000 cases of COVID-19 infection since the beginning of coronavirus outbreak in the South American country.

The Ministry of Health reports at least 222 new deaths, while the undersecretary of Assistance Networks, Arturo Zúñiga said the total number of COVID-19 related fatalities is 2,870.

“I want to remind [the people] that these deceased persons correspond to the date of registration of their death,” said Zuñiga.

Likewise, the MINSAL official noted that they have recorded 6,754 new infections, the highest daily number, with 6,217 symptomatic and 537 asymptomatic, bringing the total number of cases in Chile to 160,846.

There are 1,647 people hospitalized in the country, 1,391 on mechanical ventilation and 372 in critical condition.

Whereas, the number of spaces available for sanitary residences throughout the country is 12,310.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Social Development and Family, Cristián Monckeberg, began a 14-day quarantine after testing positive for the PCR by COVID-19, becoming the third secretary of state to contract the virus, after the headlines of Energy and Public Works, Juan Carlos Jobet and Alfredo Moreno.

This Friday, at 10:00 p.m., the total quarantine for Valparaíso and Viña del Mar begins, where the total number of infected cases exceed 1,000 cases in each commune.

The communes of Melipilla, Peñaflor, Til Til, San José de Maipo and Curacaví have also been added to the confinement.

For now, none of the communes that remain in quarantine will have the restrictions lifted.

Since Thursday, Carabineros de Chile have arrested 1,247 people for violating the curfew and the health quarantine.
