FIDAE 2018: Latin America’s biggest aerospace and defense show kicks off in Chile

SANTIAGO – The 20th Air and Space Fair (Fidae), the most important aviation event in Latin America, has kicked off in Chile with a participation of more than 50 exhibitors and about 120 civil and military aircraft.

FIDAE, a biennial international air show held in Santiago, Chile, is the largest aerospace and defense fair in Latin America. More than 120,000 attendees are expected to attend.

In addition, the F-35, the most modern American fighter plane in the world, is presented for the first time.

According to Colonel Jaime Reyes, host of this new version of the Fidae, among the attractions that the fair brings this year is the US delegation, who for the first time bring to the F-35 Lightning, the American warplane, most modern in the world.

As indicated by Reyes in a press conference, this plane “will revolutionize the future of military aviation in the next 30 years.”

The F-35s possess technology to evade enemy radars and modern missile defense systems.

The United States Air Force will also present the F-22 Raptor, which will perform various aerial precision exercises every day, showing its capabilities that allow it to be considered one of the most advanced ships in the world, being able to fly at speeds supersonic.

Another highlight of this year’s Fidae is the visit of skipper Skip Stewart, who will perform an air show on the Prometheus ship.

In addition, the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, strategic long-range subsonic bomber aircraft , powered by eight jet engines and manufactured by the US company Boeing, will be presented.

Russia’s state hi-tech corporation Rostec will feature over 200 weapon systems at the FIDAE-2018 arms exhibition. In addition, Rosoboronexport’s exhibition stand will be displaying Su-30 multirole fighter jets, MiG-29M/M2 multifunctional fighters, Yak-130 combat training aircraft, Mi-28NE attack helicopters, Ka-52 reconnaissance and attack gunships, Mi-17 military transport helicopters, Mi-171E transport helicopters and also Ansat and Ka-226T light multirole helicopters

One third of the sample – which this year brings together 50 countries – is dedicated to military aviation and the rest to civil and commercial aviation , where drones – or remotely piloted aircraft – stand out as another of the maximum attractions of this fair.

“The drones stopped being a fad; today they are far from being that. This technology is having an exponential development, practically without limits of use,” said Colonel Rojas about this highly valued technology in the civil and defense field.

In the civil field, the presence of the modern A350-900 stands out, the mainstay of the A350 XWB family of Airbus.

La Fidae, that began on Tuesday, will conclude on April 8th (Sunday) in the north sector of the Santiago airport.
