Romania extradites Chile’s Garay, accused of embezzling CLP$ 900 million

Chilean economist Rafael Garay is escorted by law enforcement officers as he is extradited from Romania to Chile, in Bucharest, Romania, March 15, 2017.

Romanian authorities have extradited a Chilean fugitive accused of embezzling around $900 million Chilean peso (ca. US$ 1.350.000), the police said on Wednesday.

Rafael Garay was arrested in the Romanian city of Brasov last November. Santiago de Chile had issued an international arrest warrant for him in September 2016, charging he had fled the country with about CLP$900 million belonging to investors in a company he controlled.

Garay announced to investors in June 2016 that he had to close the firm and undergo treatment in France for brain cancer.

Garay was put aboard a regular Bucharest-Paris flight at midday.
