Both chambers of the Chile’s National Congress endorsed unanimously government’s proposal of the “March Bonus” on Wednesday. Senate Votes Special Protection for Tatio Geysers In Northern Chile
Written by Steve Anderson
Monday, 28 December 2009 02:11

Environmentalists and community leaders praised the Senate’s decision last week to declare the Tatio Geysers in northern Chile a “National Monument and Nature Sanctuary.”

The Senate’s action responds to fears that energy and mining exploration in northern Chile could harm the Tatio Geysers – one of the nation’s most valued tourism attractions, located close to San Pedro de Atacama. The new Nature Sanctuary designation will sharply restrict energy and mining development projects in the area.

Indeed, a botched exploration effort near the Tatio Geyers created a 60-meter high artificial geyser near the Tatio Geysers last October. It took more than one month to control the artificial geyser and the company responsible – Empresa Geotermica Norte (EGN) - was slapped with 14 citations for operational breaches by government inspectors (ST, Oct. 13).

More than 1,800 Chileans wait-listed for organ transplants

Congress passed a universal organ donation law this week, which must now be signed by President Michelle Bachelet before becoming law.

The bill says all Chileans over 18 years of age will be considered organ donors upon death, unless they provided a written statement or other official indication saying they do not want to donate their organs.  Those who wish for non-donor status may also request the declaration be added to their driver’s license or ID card.
