On 24th anniversary of failed attempt on her husband's life

Lucia Hiriart, the wife of former  Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet, lamented Tuesday that rightest political friends who were once so close to the dictator have abandoned her and her family.

Interviewed on Radio Bio Bio after attending a mass on the 24th anniversary of an ambush in the Cajon de Maipo that her husband miraculously escaped, Hiriart said she was saddened that many of the dictator’s political friends from the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) party have avoided the family in recent years. Pinochet died in 2006 at age 91 of ailments associated with old age.

Carmen Cardinali Paoa Appointed Governor of Chile’s Easter Island | Print |  E-mail

Amid the ongoing protests and land conflict on Easter Island, Rodrigo Ubilla, Undersecretary of the Interior, has named professor Carmen Cardinali Paoa as Governor of the island.

The position has been vacant since Aug. 9, when then Governor Pedro Edmunds Paoa resigned. Pedro Edmunds’ appointment had caused controversy with Rapa Nui residents when it was discovered that those who elected him intended to purchase plots of land on the island. This prompted land occupations by Rapa Nui indigenous groups demanding a restitution of their ancestral lands (ST, Aug. 11).

Polls Finds Bachelet Viewed As Best President in Chile’s History | Print |  E-mail

A recent Ipsos survey carried out for the bicentennial celebrations found that Michelle Bachelet is considered to be the best president Chile has had. Bachelet received 43 percent of the vote, followed by Jorge Alessandri with 8.5 percent, and Ricardo Lagos with 6.6 percent.

President Pinera To Toast Bicentennial In Centennial Re-creation With Foreign Diplomats | Print |  E-mail

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera announced Monday that as part of the bicentennial celebrations he will help recreate an event that was held during Chile's 100th year anniversary celebrations.

In 1910, President Emiliano Figueroa held a dinner at Cafe Torres in Santiago for the foreign diplomats in Chile, which he led with a toast. Pinera will repeat the event by toasting foreign diplomats at the same location.  Also invited to the event are Chile’s four former presidents  - Patricio Aylwin, Eduardo Frei, Ricardo Lagos and Michelle Bachelet.

Brazilian Supreme Court Lifts Ban On Political Satire | Print |  E-mail

Brazil's Supreme Court has overruled the government’s ban on political satire on radio and television before the October election.

The preliminary decision was made late Thursday when Supreme Court Judge Ayres Britto ruled that the 1997 law does not mean to allow censorship of Brazilian media because censorship is unconstitutional.

Judith A. McHale, U.S. undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, began a trip through Argentina, Uruguay and Chile on Tuesday, her first visit to the region since she assumed her position. She is expected to be in the region until Sept. 2.

Luis Schmidt, former president of the National Society of Agriculture (SNA) and the Chilean Fruit Growers Association (Fedefruta), has been offered the position of the Chilean Ambassador to China.

The new government of President Sebastian Piñera has been searching to fill the ambassadorship position since Hernán Somerville, President of the Bank Association, turned it down in July. Somerville, who had initially accepted the ambassadorship, cited a lack of embassy resources as one of the primary reasons for his retraction (ST, July 13).

Approval rating shoots up from  49 to 65 percent

President Sebastián Piñera’s approval rating rose 10 points during the month of August, reaching a monthly average 56 percent, according to an Adimark survey published this week. This is the best evaluation obtained by the current president in the nearly six months he has been in office.

Seeks to consolidate the opposition and regain the presidency in the next election.

When Sebastián Piñera was elected president this past January, the Concertación, Chile’s left-leaning political alliance, relinquished the presidency after 20 years.

For many political analysts, the victory of the right-wing coalition of Renovación Nacional and UDI was made possible because of the lack of cohesion in the four-party Concertación coalition. The coalition’s 2010 presidential candidate Eduardo Frei was unable to unify the party and lost a considerable votes to a third candidate, the former Concertación member Dep. Marco Enríquez Ominami.

On Sunday, shortly before President Sebastián Piñera's trip to Copiapó to make contact with the 33 trapped miners there, his father-in-law Eduardo Morel passed away after a two-year battle with cancer at the age of 87. Pinera's wife is Morel's youngest daughter, Cecilia Morel Montes.
