Despite Catholic Church’s lobby to include Pinochet-era human rights violators

After weeks of competing pressure from the public, religious leaders and human rights organizations, President Sebastián Piñera decided Sunday not to give the green light to a sweeping Bicentennial pardon that would include Pinochet-era prisoners and human rights violators. Piñera said doing so would “only reopen wounds from the past.”

Catholic Church leaders had spent months working on a Bicentennial pardon that would have included prisoners convicted of human rights violations during the military government of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
