Socialist Party to meet with Catholic Church leader Bishop Goic


The Catholic Church and the left political leaders in Chile appear to be on  a collision course regarding a “bicentennial pardon” that the Church first proposed last year.

Prison chaplain Jaime Nawrath insists that the Church-sponsored pardons should transcend “history and political considerations,” while Socialist Party (PS) leaders want to ensure that Pinochet-era human rights violators do not receive any pardons. During the 17-year Pinochet dictatorship more than 30,000 Chileans were tortured and more than 1,200 disappeared, many of them Socialist Party activists.
