Chile: Hidden Housing Damage Frightens Santiago Tenants

While the city looks relatively intact from the outside, renters feel insecure

“We lost everything,” Fernando Carbajal Jimenez says. “We lost seven years of our lives.” Carbajal was in bed with his wife, eight-months pregnant, when the 8.8-magnitude earthquake woke them.

“The roof fell in on us,” he recalls. He pulled his wife out from the rubble and out into the street. Then, while the earth was still rocking and his apartment falling in on itself, he went back in for his seven year old son.  Incredibly, the family made it out safely, but their apartment in an old adobe home in La Cisterna, a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Santiago, was destroyed.
